<image:caption>If She Knew You Were Coming... Found objects covered in sewn glass beads, wood table 2015 Total measurements with table and pieces installed- 23” deep X 40” wide X 57” tall. # # # A few years ago, someone asked me, if I could eat anywhere in the world, where would it be? The answer came without hesitation—at my mother’s table. This piece, If She Knew You Were Coming… is about my mother. Not just about the food she made, but the people she gathered, the life she helped to me imagine, and the gratitude I feel. # # # My mother loved to gather good people around a table. I am the fifth of six children so one could make the case that she already had plenty enough to feed, but we were forever adding leaves to our old walnut table to accommodate a few more chairs and place settings. Her kitchen was her studio. She read recipe books like novels and never tossed the food section of a newspaper without first clipping a few recipes she looked forward to trying. Her guests were as varied as her cuisine. There were small town folk and big city people, artists, teachers, hippies and John Birchers. Atheist, Mormons, conservatives and liberals dined at our table; homosexuals and missionaries, world travelers, people of color, and there were even a few people with little or no color that snuck in now and again. Interesting conversations peppered with laughter lingered long after dishes were cleared and kids were not encouraged to hurry away. These people and the stories they told were a window to the world for my siblings and me. Through them I began to imagine a life of travel and adventure. Through them I saw a creative life that did not follow a usual path.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Hanging On By a Thread - Hanging On By a Thread (Copy)</image:title>
<image:caption>Hanging On By a Thread Glass beads, thread, marbles 8" X 8" X 9" 1998 Hanging On By A Thread was made for a show that was curated by Mobilia Gallery in Cambridge MA. The title of the show was “Artifacts and Archetypes”. I was asked to write some text for a label that might accompany this piece if it were to be found in a museum collection sometime in the future: In the latter part of the twentieth century there was a renaissance in beadwork. It is believed that this may have been related to the hysteria that occurred as civilization anticipated the year 2000. As the millennium approached, neurosis became increasingly evident in the general population. Predictably this was reflected in Religion, Politics, and Art. Though little is known about this Artist, it is believed that this is an autobiographical piece reflecting an obsessive-compulsive desire to work in a medium that is time consuming and tedious beyond reason. This compulsion was not uncommon among artists of the time and is believed to be a reaction to the onset of the computer age. Considering the hours that this kind of work required, it is not surprising that the majority of artist who were drawn to this medium endured lives plagued by squalor and anonymity. This piece has survived remarkably intact and is a good example of pre-millennium neurosis-based artwork.</image:caption>

<image:caption>108 Meditations in Saffron Found objects, glass beads, thread 42" X 48" X 18" 2008 Collection of the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, New York A few years ago I made it my habit to walk every day. I was living in a large city and couldn’t help noticing how much garbage littered my path. I lamented this fact, and wondered, with more than a little sanctimony, what kind of person throws trash to the ground? My indignation increased with each bottle or discarded wrapper. As my regime progressed, I gained a begrudging interest in these objects of contempt. I noticed that there are socioeconomic patterns to street garbage. One neighborhood’s garbage is not the same as the next. I learned the places where homeless people sit and drink. I was fascinated when visiting Kyoto, Japan to discover a city where not one speck of litter could be found. I began to see the detritus in the streets where I live as a record of sorts and even looked forward to what I would find each day. I also began to see items that had not existed until recent years and wondered what a collection of litter from today would look like in ten, twenty or one hundred years. Inevitably, I began to pick up objects that appealed to me. When I moved to a neighborhood that was less inclined toward litter, I found that I was disappointed not to see so many of these messages from my community along my path. It felt unfriendly. My own transformation complete, I wanted to show this work in a way that the wonderment I felt for these objects could be shared. I think of my walks as meditations and decided to showcase my collection by covering each found item in saffron beads the color of the robes of the Buddhist monks I had seen in Southeast Asia. I collected and covered one hundred and eight items.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Collector Sand-cast glass Upper panel: 101”L x 68”H, 47 pieces. Bottom panels: 31”L x 96”H, 30 pieces (each). Total weight, just under 2000 pounds. 2011 A copy of this window exists and is available for purchase. The Collector   As a child, my family had a pet crow. Jeremiah lived in the tall trees that shaded our yard but would hang out on our windowsills and encourage us to come out and play. When our door opened, he was often waiting and would land on the shoulder of the first person to leave the house… this startled more than one guest. He teased our dog and endeared himself to all of us who were fortunate enough to share his life for a time. From Jerry the crow, I learned that crows are smart, funny and social. They collect, recycle, and use tools. These, I believe, are qualities worth honoring. With just a little bit of luck, your efforts are sure to be rewarded and you will soon be in a position to decide how life will be for the people who are further down on the heap of humanity… the further away one gets from that model the more difficult it is to get your piece of the pie. I have often wondered what would happen if we as a society decided to choose a new model and suddenly, say black lesbians in wheelchairs were at the top of the heap and making 90% of the decisions that affect the rest of our lives. <image:caption>Handbag Beads, thread, zipper 10" X 10" X 2" 2007 Available for Purchase When I was eight years old, my grandmother died. Part of my mother’s inheritance was a fox fur stole. It was made from three foxes that were held around the neck by little springs that occupied the place where a jaw once was. Being, that kind of boy, I could not wait to try it on. It was the most glamorous thing I could imagine and I looked forward to seeing my mother wear it. I imagined us together in line at the grocery store and the admiring throngs that would look our way. I couldn’t think of any reason she wouldn’t wear it everywhere she went, but as time passed, I was puzzled by the fact that I seemed to be the only one interested in taking it out of the box it came it. A few years ago while staying in a small cabin with my brother and his wife, we looked out our window and saw two foxes chasing each other around in the snow. I remembered my mother’s stole and thought about the foxes it was made from. Hand Bag is for the foxes that gave their life for that unworn fur stole.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Bedside Table Found objects covered in sewn glass beads, wood table 64" X 20" X 20" 2011 Bedside Table is inspired by a moment shared with siblings as we worked to empty my parent’s house. As we sorted personal items, we made three stacks; the save stack, the toss stack and the donate stack. In my father’s room I opened the drawer next to his bed. I removed it and approached the waiting garbage can. I could see no l reason to save its contents. I began to tip the drawer, but then changed my mind. It was suddenly unthinkable to live in a world where this collection of inconsequential personal items did not exist. In that moment, these items represented all the security and feelings of stability that I associated with my parents. I returned the drawer and its contents to its table and brought them to my home. Bedside Table is inspired by that drawer. It is a collection of fatherly things painstakingly covered in tiny white beads. The beads and the needlework, hold the items in time and space. The objects, rendered useless by their covering, can now be appreciated as iconic images and a reminder of the places in our lives that hold meaning and memory.</image:caption>

      <image:title>1982 - 1982 (Copy)</image:title>
<image:caption>1982 1982 is so named because it evokes a time when a duel cassette, oversized boombox and the music it played seldom left my side. As much appendage as appliance, I brought it to work, on road trips and to the beach. I played it at home and shared it with the company I kept. This object, now rendered silent by layers of tiny glass beads and thread, is about a time of innocence, a time of celebration. It is also about the coming turbulence that would come to define that decade for me, and for so many of my friends. Purchased with my first credit card, a boombox, and the music it played, provided an introduction to the mysterious realm of the adult. Like me, it came with a collection of knobs and buttons I didn’t quite know how to operate but that seemed compelling nonetheless. At twenty two years old, I had very little experience with love, loss, heartbreak or sex, The music I listened to allowed me to conjure my life to come and to feel vicariously what I had yet to experience for myself. I didn’t know it then but I clearly see it now. The music we listen to is instinctual and tribal. It draws people to us and keeps others at bay. The thumping drone of disco or the smoky voices of people who had experienced life in ways that I had not, helped me to find my familiars and prepared me as best it could for what was to come. As I set out to try everything and unwrap every gift of my youth, I imagined a future full of possibility. It was exhilarating, but just as I experienced so many firsts; many friends, too many to count, would soon discover that their futures were to be cut short by a terrifying new virus. I can no longer hear the music I listened to then, without thinking of all those I once sweated the dance floor with. The 1980’s for me are the embodiment of bittersweet. This object evokes the echo of music that decorated my path in a time before grief and is in remembrance of so many members of my tribe who sang along. <image:title>Love Dad - Love, Dad (Copy)</image:title>
<image:caption>Love, Dad Glass beads, thread, wooden table, a thirty year collection of letters from my father 48" x 22" x 17" 2012 My father was typical of many men; friendly but not intimate, familiar but not known. I loved him but struggle still to understand the distance he kept. That said, my father did not let a week pass without sending me a hand written, newsy and advice-laden letter. Even with the emphasis on advise, I loved getting these missives and in 1980 I began saving them. When he passed, I found myself with a collection, now complete, which spanned thirty years. I had imagined myself going back and re-reading them after his death. When the anticipated time arrived, the box that housed them loomed large in its place in my home. I thought of delving into its contents but could not bring myself to do it. I have known grief and do not fear it, but I am also my father’s son. While I am willing to engage, I do not invite sadness and reading about a world where a father and mother shared a home and offered updates and council to a young son as he experienced the first throws of independence seemed impossibly sad. Instead, I spent a year laboring to create a place for these letters. I recognize the importance of what they represent but I am making the choice to contain them and to place them in an environment where they can be seen but not shared. As I began this work, I thought of this image as a metaphor for my father and his illusive nature. As I completed it, I understood that this effort is as much a symbol of how I deal with my feelings as for how my father dealt with his. Love, Dad is about a father and son who loved each other, each in their own sincere and flawed way.</image:caption>
